I have been enjoying some great summer reads.
The fiction I have recently read and recommend,
The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera
Possesing the Secret of Joy by Alice Walker
right now I am into, and almost out of
Getting Over Edgar by Joan Barfoot, I am liking it.

Yep, all kinds

after the man looking for the biography of the influential philosopher Ludwig Wittenstein left
(which i actually found after he left in fiction of all places,)
the man with the faded tattooed knuckles came in
they read on one hand "love"
on the other hand "hate"
it wasn't that he joked with me in that way that wasn't funny
trying to be clever and trying to make a joke out of me
or the fact that I wasn't taken with his choice in reading material
it was the threat to the parrot
"squawk at me again like that and i'm gonna slit your throat"
it was the conviction in his voice that prompted me to
consider asking him to leave,
(really threatening the parrot for pete's sake)
i responded with this thought bubble, but kept my silence
"really, what gave you that idea?"
the man looking for Wittenstein wore around his neck a bird in flight necklace
and asked if we had any spoken word on c.d.
the man with the knuckles tried to play nice
but couldn't
they both were older,
the philosopher king in his 50's
the tattooed knuckle man in his 60's
i told my boss this story
"Yep, it takes all kinds"
he said

if i win the lottery i will give you some

upstairs i come to find him standing there
in black and white, bespecled
like the guy from the payolas,
a little bit rock a billy,
probably a little bit crazy,
curly blond hair, hornrims
and a belly paunch
he surveys the videos,
consuming them
remembering them
and asks if he can have me hold them
okay,
i will be in in 10 days thats when i get paid
he stacks videos in a neat pile,
some good titles some questionable
from pretty woman, citizen cane to the lion king
he asks about the cd on the film angela's ashes
and tells me he is irish too,
then runs out like he has left a pot on the stove
muttering something about his forgotten dad,
it is fathers day after all
will this guy ever come back?
he says he will in half an hour
will he get paid in 10 days?
half an hour later he is back
continuing to stock pile
a temptations cd
the bag i am filling with his name on it
Jeff, will collect in 10 days
is over flowing
he is happy to have the items held,
the 20 or so videos are just what he has been searching for i am certain
he tells me he plays the lottery once twice a week and if he wins
he will give me some
thanks thats great says i
keeping pace with the fast double dutch of this encounter
i can't hold any more for you
he eyes the bag
no more bags eh, i will bring you some
i will see you in 10 days,
he says
flying out the store
dad at the window,
and some how i do believe i will.

coffee cake

walking in with a gym bag
and immediacy
he unloads his wears
several paper backs with potential
he regards the cook books as the most special offers
i notice one on coffee cake,
and chance to guess
"do you like coffee cake?"
i ask the slim kinda wired fellow with the sunglasses and beaded
choker
"oh yeah"
his eyes light up
"and did you try any of these recipes"
unsure where he is getting these books
"oh yeah, not just coffee cake, special chocolate raspberry coffee cake"
he dosn't say "can you dig it"
but it is implied
just the thought of this guy cooking anything let alone coffee cake, fills me to the brim
how could i not buy it
for a moment in time
we meet,
a safe, savoury moment
full and fragrant
of imaginary kitchens
and dreams of coffee cakes

H

7 days ago I woke up with the idea of eating the alphabet, albeit trying to maintain a balanced way of eating. On the first day I ate foods beginning with the letter A and moved ahead accordingly, I also thought about that letter and words beginning with that letter. I have a new consciousness regarding letters and food. I am really motivated to cook too. So far I have made some lovely black bean burritos, and a delicious dahl. F day kind of fatiqued me and the day that was E I found had an enlightened energy. Today is H it is hot and humid....Happy H day to you.

this weeks theme is 'digital' which i must say really baffled me...

brussel sprouts

as overheard in the fruit market
"those brussel sprouts look anemic"

i had to see for myself

they did

it was clear to me the sprouts
were neglecting looking after themselves
clearly should be in rehab
unappetizing
and certainly not obtaining enough iron
those sprouts looked anemic,
and some thing had to be done...and Now!

we are

we are
aren't we
walking along
introspective
sending messages
sooner or later
there is a fall
whether of breasts
of chin
we are
delicate and strong
each singing the song of us
whether we know it or not
the sharp edge city
comes into harsh focus
in the bright sunlight
nothing can hide us
each clinging to something
someone
each taking one more step
towards, away from
we are
and sometimes i wish
we were not
but
instead just sat with our selves
comfortably,
wrinkly,
off,
not quite 'right'
and in unison shouted
YES
