Barbie's Custom Made Mop

my mother cleaned a lot
i made barbie a custom made mop
straw
yellow sponge
cut into strips
and taped

today
girl falls on playground
examine the gash
bea says to convince herself
your not gonna die

kid is annoyed by this
ridiculous passionate hopeful response

i buy a canvas
paint a painting
with Buddha in the corner
on the number 10 of clubs
wind blows through open window

wash the floor and clean the cat box

and think fondly of my custom made barbie mop

first craft

making smokes
Originally uploaded by Kim's Suitcase.
there i am at the dining room table
1970's danish modern
bold geometric in olive, orange, brown, sunburst yellow
this is the backdrop
the table cloth
at the long windows olive green net
first floor
no one can see in
Here i sit
straight back against teak
feet rest on rust carpet
placemat placed
and
box of tubes with filters
turquoise blue ribbed plastic box
square, white lid
tabacco
Belvedere Light? Maybe.
and the machine to make them
cheery red, dark, lux
metal. like a luxury automobile
knob round black
i put the tabacco inside
the little metal ditch like chamber
put a tube to the mouth of the
machine
and let the knob into my 9 year old palm
following the river
towards cigarette making
Mum checks my progress
as I drift off in delicious smells
of cold fresh tabacco
rust, yellow, earthy,
"is this okay?'
i ask
"hmmh a little too loose"
oh, too loose
and this-too tight
and this-not even enough
until i get it just right
how many?
20
hows that?
thanks
my first craft
ceremonous cigarette making
in which i never test the product
happy to be making
sitting
focusing
working with hands
raw material
making something
intimate
that matters
a good smoke

i can not enter through the front door,
so i go round to the back
i am experiencing technical difficulties
no need for upset
before you rip your dress open
look outside
see the sun shine down
see spot run

fallen

as i walked yesterday
i saw a man
take a fall
in the road
i stopped
while lines of cars waited
as we picked up his change

injured or not
jolted back to another time
1986
a motorbike accident
had left him
crushed
trache scarred
broken
in a coma

i am not sure how he was before the fall
but he needed to tell his words
took help easy
wanting someone to do something
this life he is having hard
pavement hitting shoulder
hard
i hope i added a tiny spot
of comfort
a ten dollar bill,
a cab ride
and an ear

Perfume

my Dad loved perfume
love is not too strong a word
although the perfume often was
he liked the perfume counter in,
shopper's drugmart, the bay,
eatons-indiscriminate really
he was happiest in his own bouquet
of scents sprayed rapidly mixed together
exclaiming 'beautiful, ah beautiful'

i think, thinking back
from this adult perspective
he had unfortunatly had the opportunity
of smelling bad smells
sad smells
stenches of death

in this new north american life
he found a more pleasant nosegay
sweet smells
security
family
love
and of course, the opulent perfume counter
he didn't get into detail
about the past

but once remembered
a happy time too
a tea cup i had
full of a popourri
called
spring rain
(the photos destroyed, the memories not)
this is my holidays
my summer holidays
an inn, in childhood
that was sweet smelling
before the stench

an olfactory sandwich
in which the bread of it
sweetly perfumed

alone

alone
Originally uploaded by Kim's Suitcase.
for www.illustrationfriday.com, this weeks topic "alone"
suddenly while home alone there was a knock at the wooly door...
no one appeared to be there,
just a table outside with a whole forest full of trees
'was i really alone' i asked myself
'sometimes
i like the headiness of hunger and being left alone'
i thought to myself...

winter not yet soothed into sleep

this day,
of snow
and slush
and wind.

old man winter,
reflux
another bout
winter not yet soothed into sleep
more to give
in power and individuality an anarchist
ignoring the dates of the calendar
that proclaim
First Day of Spring
