"i feel like i will fall into the sky"
that is what she said...

Today's weather is: Rainy
peeling paint lets you see the years
rooted to a spot
my belly behaves badly
when i smell the school basement
and i think of all those rainy mornings
and kids cooped on benches
instead of playing in the puddles

keep your nose tiday!
(my sister's wise words, please note poem works best with an English accent)
yes it is very late, actually it is very early,
and i am back to bed...
three cheers for the land of nod, the chamber of sleep, and life in a pod

variety dumpling surprise
stacks of white plastic table cloths
make my knees perspire
my dim sum is closed this is another place
the chef with the paper hat, wide
set eyes speaks no english,
nods to a menu
inside so quiet. the hum of electrical workings
tiny fruit flies on the vinegar bottle
one dead beside the salt,
no pepper present.
i am in a basement, like in a dream
one of the double doors is open
held in place by a chair
above ground the street,
another building, the ramble of the streetcar
swinging arms, moving legs of the occasional person
walking by on dundas
i will have what i will call "the variety dumpling surprise"
hints only
the first egg + spinach
the second pork gingerly
the third tofu and chive
tea is hot milk
thumbs up
scalding and different
the fourth slids inside my mouth
shy familiar taste pork + ginger
another styrofoam cup sip
reveals something new to me
,hot soya milk
i pour vinegar and
with it a small fruit fly
that slowly breaststrokes
across my soy/vinegar
the next dumpling surprise
perhaps is beef
i am getting full
but the chef wide eyes
smiling
nice
go
has wisely placed the dumplings
in a styrofoam square
to take away (just in case)
the tea which isn't
grows on me - comforting
a good morning drink
(i think he knows something i do not)
another dumpling chicken
soaked in the soy/vinegar
concerned the chef limps
forward
not eating i point outside,
pat my belly say "full"
but drink and eat another
not to offend
chop,chop, chop
the next satisfying chinese greens
chicken + pork + something green
next time i will bring rhonda and share
another man comes in
hello, giggles and
turns on the light
okay
yes good thank you
two voices bouncing
in the back
frontman
and backstage hand
forced to limp to the front
his chance, without language
comic and nice
the dream fades
as the lights come on
the last dumpling
chosen sits soaking
in vinegar-
i have lost count
looking in two left
i know it was 10
10 was large pork
and now i pause
and play with the idea
only two little mystery dumplings left
through their doughy
semi-transparent wrapper
i see green
lighter
of the vegetable variety
and i do
i will
eat the last two!
saving the final sips
to ease them down
...and then
dumpling filled
i will walk fill my nostrils
as the food circulates
i become even more awake
the door closes
the fake breeze
of a/c starts
before the dawn
of this restaurants
new day...
a little less official
protected
and the chance
for wordless gesture filled interchange
and happy drink misunderstanding
the last two egg and spinach and
the biggest surprise
is that
i ate all
twelve
mystery
dumplings
i am so so full.

escape
This weeks theme at Illustration Friday is "Escape".
My illo is based on the wonderful Philip Pullman book entitled 'The Subtle Knife'. Will is one of the central charactors and keeper of the subtle knife. The knife can cut anything including this world(or any other) opening a window into different worlds.

Psst looky here!
my website has been built by the lovely and talented Tracey Graham.
Her link is on my bio page. If you have a moment it would be grand if
you checked my new new spanking new site out and told me what you think please!!
Still to be added is the navigation icon...i hope for a little suitcase there.
One day too the store really will be full of things for sale.
Currently I am working to get stuff ready for Sunday September 25th
"Word on the Street", this year it happens at Queens Park and is a fun big
literary event, books and word related things. My pal James and I will be
selling our "365 Reason not to Be Bored Calendar" (he is the inventor of this and the author i do the illos ), as well as charms, trinkets
and wordy parafinalia....Please come if you are in Toronto, or even if you are not.
Love and Peace and mini wheats....kim
(p.s. we can be found at word on the street under james' small press name ' 2X4 to the forehead').

Sasha and Me
Sasha is my first feathered friend, an embassador to birds if you will, she has taught me very well, I can now really see birds and wow are they ever amazing. I love her. She lives in the second hand book/music store where I work part time.

today's fabric
in the morning
the cover
of the cage is lifted
the bird inside croaks "hello"
and slowly adjusts its eyes
to the brightness and possibility
of this new day
we take carefully the strings
that hold the bolt of fabric together
and slowly with care
unroll it
unraveling
revealing the fabric of this day
is it silk?
perhaps terry cloth
weighty with comfort
and utilitarian appeal
a swiss dot?
cheeky gingham, soft and youthful?
spicy batik full of the flavor
of incense and wax
cheap crisp dyed cotton
stiff and brilliant
embellished with beads
rich luxurious velvet
dark purple brown
wishing to be walked upon
or maybe instead it changes constantly
starting as uncertain as gauze
and ending with
the deep sleep of brocade.

wedged into the house alone
happily

at all the new details
and scatterings of those
that i roost with...
